Ivan III

Grand duke of Moscow (q.v.) from 1462-1505. He married Sophia Palaiologina (q.v.), who was daughter of Thomas Palaiologos (q.v.), last despot of the Morea (qq.v.), and niece of Byzantium's (q.v.) last emperor, Constantine XI Palaiologos [qq.v.]). He displayed the two-headed eagle on his seals, introduced Byzantine ceremonial to his court, and encouraged the view that Moscow had inherited the mantle of Byzantium (q.v.) as defender of Orthodoxy (q.v.).
